Energizer Bunny
We've had HDH's dad and stepmom in town this week - and as always, they are very easy to have around and the week has gone really well. The Bug has been thrilled to no end to have his Papa and MeMaw around full-time, and they've certainly enjoyed having him climb all over them, insisting they play with this toy and that.
Last night, I was starting to run out of gas a little. I think I'm still battling something sinus-related, so I've a little less energetic than normal. I was sitting down and my son asked me why I was so tired, prompting the following exchange:
Bug: Why you tired, Mommy?Me: Mommy has a cold and doesn't feel so good.Bug: Aw. Maybe you need new batteries? Maybe so!! And if it were only that easy.
PS And thanks to all of you who have sent me an email, asking to be added to the read-only list. I'm happy to add the lurkers, really! So don't be worried I'm sorting those I know from those I don't.

News.
Meh.
Today, I got word that my uncle was taken Flight For Life into a local hospital with congestive heart failure, fluid and blood clots in his lungs, among a few other problems. He hasn't taken the best care of himself, but conversely, this is still the best connection I really have to my dad (who has been gone for twelve years). I will be the first to admit that the news really shook me up. I had a chance to meet up with my grandparents and my aunt at a place up the road (prompting one of the funniest exchanges I've heard between them in a long while), and the intent of visiting my uncle on Friday morning when he is allowed visitors.
Tonight, I was having the discussion with my husband about my absolute fear of losing the men in my life. My mother lost her grandfather, brother and husband in a short amount of time. I've lost my closest grandfather and another man that was just like family to me. I told him I had sworn after my dad died that I wouldn't get married, or stay with anyone too long. I didn't want to lose anyone else.
HDH: You really felt that way?
HDW: Yes, I did. If you don't answer me right away, I am afraid you have had a heart attack somewhere and died. I can't not think that way. I've been preprogrammed after losing people I love.
HDH: I take good care of myself.
HDW: So did my dad. HDH: Well, let's be realistic, shall we? If I'm going to die, it's not because I haven't taken care of myself. It's going to be because I've pissed you off enough that you "take care of the problem" and feed me to the fish. I'm just saying, HDW, that that's far more likely. HDW: And you have a point. A good one. Labels: family, hdh-isms

City of Lost Wages
We're leaving tomorrow for a quick trip to the City of Lost Wages. Neither of us are gamblers, so we're going to hit some great shops and see some shows. And this time, I am wearing better shoes as not to wish for amputation somewhere on The Strip like the last time I was there.
The first time I was in Vegas, my mom took me for my 21st birthday. This is somewhat symbolic as the woman was pretty religious, and although had evening cocktails at times, she was on my ass for years about not drinking, not smoking, not looking at things I shouldn't be looking at, and certainly, gambling your hard earned money away in Sin City. Okay, well, maybe not the latter, but still ...
My mother insisted Las Vegas was something I needed to experience. Instead of sending the birthday girl and her best friend into Sin City alone, she herself, invited my very hip grandmother (truly, no sarcasm there - she's awesome!), my best friend at the time and her mom. My best friend was recently married, and her husband had a shit fit knowing we were going to Las Vegas. Never mind that we couldn't have been with a more docile crowd had we got on a tour bus full of Baptist Missionaries. I mean, come on.
The five of us boarded a plane, Mom ordered me a really awful glass of wine as my 'first drink' (riiiiiiiiiiight ... hello, Sloegin and Dr. Pepper, anyone? Tasted like asshole, if I knew what asshole tasted like, that is) ... and we landed in Vegas a short time later.
And here we are, waiting to land in Vegas (I'm on the left):

I remember a few things about this trip:
1. Being 21 and wishing to God All Mighty that my mother wasn't on this trip, never mind she was paying for the thing. She hovered over me, insisting I drink, and there is never a more awkward moment that having a parent for 20 years telling you that drinking is bad, and suddenly, standing next to you insisting you have everything on the menu. I didn't drink but a few things on the trip. It sucked.
2. I lost all my money gambling. My girlfriend won everything.
3. My grandmother sat down on a bench one evening, and it happened to be right under the neon sign that said, "Girls of Glitter Gulch" and an arrow pointing straight to her. I have that picture somewhere. Classic, totally. Sadly, I can't find that picture -- so here's one of me and my girlfriend, posing for the camera:

4. My mother also insisted that we know what a late-night female revue was like. So, again, I sat in the crowd, looking at naked women with the business all out there with my mother (remember, folks, this is the same woman who wouldn't let me watch Doogie Howser because it was the 'decline of children's television'). Hard to switch gears, you know.
I've been to Vegas a few times since. Once to celebrate my aunt's 50th birthday, and her daughter and boyfriend decided to get married while we were there.
Myself, my aunt, my still very hip grandmother:

I'm sure we're going to have a great time this go round. Will be back next week .. have a great weekend, everyone!

Survival of the Fittest
We hosted HDHusband's family over the weekend. They came in for HDToddler's 3rd birthday party - came in on Friday night, left early this morning.
The birthday party we hosted on Saturday went really well. A bunch of kids hopped up on the sugary goodness that was the Batman cake, running around a jumping in the Thomas the Tank Engine ball pit my sister-in-law got for my son (thank you, I so want to keep track of the 100 balls that he's dumping out - ha). My seven-year-old nephew was hitting one of the neighbor girls. I heard,
'Hey, he thinks you are soooooo cute!!" a few times.
The presents were opened, and I missed most of it for some reason (really? where the hell was I?), so now I have absolutely no clue what goes with what. And beings that it was a Batman birthday party theme, everything is a Batman toy. I don't have a prayer.
In unrelated news, my mother-in-law (HDH's stepmom) always comes up with some random thing to say or opinion to give. Just sort of swerves in out of left field and leaves me speechess. We happened to be talking on Friday night about various kid's movies and how there's always some adult humor involved. My mother-in-law informed me that the movie "Over the Hedge" is
really about mexican immigrants trying to cross the border.
I'm glad I could enlighten y'all.
You can thank me later.
